Sherlock Holmes 3 director Guy Ritchie divulged why he is not as “involved” with the film’s creation.

Sherlock Holmes 3 Robert Downey Jr. was just getting started in his role as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he was also bringing another fictional character from the written paper to life.

Sherlock Holmes 2009 marked Robert Downey Jr.’s first appearance in the role of the fictional investigator established by Arthur Conan Doyle, and the following year, 2011,

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Then there is the third installment of the Sherlock Holmes series, which has been mired in development purgatory for well over a decade, with no indication that it is making any headway in recent years.

Now, Guy Ritchie, who directed Robert Downey Jr.’s first two Sherlock Holmes features, has revealed the reason why he is not as “associated” with the production of the threequel at this time.

Guy Ritchie has been busy marketing his newest film, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, which stars Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, and Josh Hartnett; however, during an interview with Collider, the subject of Sherlock Holmes 3 was brought up. It is essential to note that as of this moment, Guy Ritchie is not connected to Sherlock Holmes 3 in any capacity, including that of director. The announcement that Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher would be taking over the helm of the threequel was made in 2019. However, in June 2022, Fletcher stated that the COVID-19 pandemic had “derailed” the production of Sherlock Holmes 3, despite the fact that he still believed the film should be made.

Since Fletcher’s departure from Sherlock Holmes 3 has not been formally confirmed, it is reasonable to assume that he will continue to serve in that capacity, and Ritchie is prepared to contribute in some other capacity, most likely in the capacity of executive producer.

Whatever the case may be, as Guy Ritchie has clarified, the decision as to whether or not Sherlock Holmes 3 will ever be produced rests squarely in the hands of Robert Downey Jr. As far as his schedule goes, Downey has been busy with other projects recently. These projects include being a part of the massive cast for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and both starring in and executive producing the upcoming HBO series The Sympathizer.

In addition, Downey is a part of the massive cast for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. Therefore, it is difficult to determine whether or not Sherlock Holmes 3 is still an essential thing on his to-do list at this point in time.
There is also the possibility that the continuation of this Sherlock Holmes universe will not take place in the form of a new movie, but rather on television. It was rumoured in April 2022 that Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey were among the executive producers working on developing two Sherlock Holmes offshoot programmes that would only be available to subscribers of HBO Max.

If one or both of these shows were to move forward, they both focus on new characters who are supposed to be introduced in Sherlock Holmes 3, and because of this, it is unknown whether or not Robert Downey Jr. would reprise the role of Sherlock in the shows or if he is only involved with them behind the scenes.
If and when the time comes for an official decision to be made regarding the future of Sherlock Holmes 3, we will make sure to send along the information. You can make plans for what you will see in theatres or access later this year by perusing the list of new movies that will be released in 2023, which is available for perusal until that time.
